Thinking about the Bigger picture of Care and Protection

Before completing the exercises and thinking about the bigger picture of Care and Protection you should have worked through the The Protection of Children (Scotland) Act 2003 and its implications for voluntary organisations before working through thinking about the bigger picture of Care and Protection as it helps you to take a few steps back to think about:

  • your organisation
  • how it already protects children and young people under the age of 18
  • already supports adults who work with them.

It will also encourage you to think about:

  • your organisation as a whole, including its purpose and values and the contribution it makes to the development of children, young people, workers and the wider community.
  • how the tasks you carry out and the guidelines and procedures you develop, interlock to make up a care and protection framework.

Thinking about the bigger picture

When faced with the task of having to respond to a new piece of legislation it is easy to feel overwhelmed by the things that need to be done and to forget about the:

  • things you already do well;
  • purpose of your organisation;
  • values and beliefs that help to shape relationships and the culture of your organisation;
  • the contribution you make to the care, welfare and development of children and young people;
  • contributions (including enthusiasm, energy and commitment) which children, young people and adults bring to your organisation;
  • contribution your organisation makes to the local community.

Exercise 3 – taking a step back should help you to reflect on these issues.
