Confidentiality Policy

Organisations may find it helpful to develop a Confidentiality Policy which should summarise their approach to the management of verbal or written confidential information. It is important that children, young people, parents/carers and workers know:

  • how personal and sensitive data (information) is processed by the organisation (e.g. why it is requested and how and where it is stored);
  • their right of access to such information (with exceptions stated);
  • the obligation on the organisation to break confidentiality when concerned about the care and protection of children and young people;
  • the obligations on all workers to treat sensitive and personal information about children, young people and their families in a professional manner.
